Zimbabwe's third largest cellular network operator by subscribers, Telecel Zimbabwe, has announced plans to roughly double its base to 700,000 users by the end of October 2009, and says it also intends to launch 3G services, reports Reuters.
The GSM provider, controlled by Egypt's Orascom Telecom, is also aiming to increase network capacity to 1.2 million users by the year-end as it implements an expansion programme made possible by the dollarisation of the economy in February, which signaled an end to hyperinflation and allowed telecoms companies to settle bills with foreign equipment suppliers.
Acting chairwoman Jane Mutasa said that Telecel Zimbabwe had 355,000 subscribers at end-July; TeleGeography's GlobalComms database indicated that state-run GSM rival NetOne had less than 400,000 customers at the same date whilst market leader Econet Wireless Zimbabwe was well ahead with over 1.25 million SIMs in operation. Econet was the first in the country to launch 3G services at the end of last month.
