A number of internet service providers (ISPs) in Ghana have reportedly requested that the government reduce or exempt them from paying taxes on broadband service costs, in an effort to drive up uptake and make high speed internet access affordable to all Ghanaians.
The Ghana News Agency says the ISPs argue such a plan would help the government reach its goal of 50% broadband penetration by 2015, as well as increase the broadband bandwidth from the current 256kbps to 2Mbps.
They have also called on the regulator, the National Communications Authority (NCA), to implement procedures that will help reduce the period that it takes to license a new telecoms operator; the figure currently stands at about five years.
