Vodacom Mozambique (VM), the country's second largest mobile operator by subscribers, has revealed plans to invest over USD7 million in the construction of a fibre-optic network linking the cities of Maputo, Matola and Beira.
Jose de Sousa, the chief executive of parent company Vodacom South Africa, said that the deployment would make it possible to launch 3G services in November. He added: 'We were due to launch 3G services last August, but we did not because of interconnection problems with Telecomunicacoes de Mocambique's network. Thus we preferred to roll out our own fibre-optics to launch the service over.'
Construction on a link between Maputo and Beira is already underway, while the company recently expanded the project to reach Matola. VM also plans to roll out fibre links to Nampula, Chimoio, Tete and Pemba in the future.
